If the idea of short shorts fills you with dread, but
you still want to partake in summer's favored pant, seek comfort in the
Bermuda! This season, Bermudas are hot, especially with cool shoes and
accessories. First appearing on the New York catwalks of Marc Jacobs and
Alexander Wang, the trend for Bermuda shorts was confirmed by a host of London
designers. These knee-length pants, also known as city shorts, crops or
knee-pants, will take you from the beach to the mall to work, and everywhere in
between… While in the past you might have been reluctant to wear these pieces,
this season's turnout is anything but frumpy. Seek guidance from the spring
runway and style with feminine or edgy accents. While solid
colors, preferably in darker tones, work best for the office,
playful prints and denim-styled shorts are great options for more casual
settings.
If you have a straight figure, say goodbye to skinny legs and hello to curves. Pair a pleated above-the-knee pair with pointy flats to get a cute flared-skirt effect. If you are petite look for bermudas with a slim, shorter silhouette, like those at top left, in order to keep you in proportion. It’s also a good idea to stay away from overwhelming prints and patterns. In the same way stilettos dress up jeans, trading in your flip flops for high heels adds a quick style upgrade to Bermuda shorts. For a night out, peep-toe pumps add a heavy dose of retro glamour. For daytime, opt for a more casual wedge or beachy espadrille. As for the most flattering pairs, look for a slim-cut design that tapers down your leg that you can pair with feminine tops like a peplum and high heels. You can also try to top your crops with a tailored blazer, and you'll take your shorts from loungewear to work attire faster than you can say "city shorts." For business dressy offices, choose a jacket in the exact same shade; if your work place has a relaxed dress code, go for a blazer in a fun coordinating pattern.
